Flavours of Jurilovca: A Community Woven into a Gift

Jun 22 2026

Some gifts tell the story of a place.

This one tells it through handmade textures, local flavours and the people behind them.

At the heart of Flavours of Jurilovca is a traditional traistă (woven shoulder bag), handcrafted by artisan Bianca Folescu, founder of Souvenir from Dobrogea, a cultural initiative dedicated to preserving and promoting the traditions, crafts and rural heritage of Dobrogea. Through her traditional household, museum and creative workshops in the village of Vișina, Bianca has become one of the region’s most active ambassadors of local culture. The bag itself is only the beginning.

Inside, visitors discover a carefully curated selection of products that reflect the identity of Jurilovca and the wider Dobrogea region.

There is honey from Mierea Milena, produced from the rich flora of Dobrogea, where bees gather nectar from acacia, linden, sunflower and wildflowers that thrive between the Danube Delta and the Black Sea.

There is fish zacuscă from Gura Portiței, inspired by the fishing traditions of the region and prepared using local fish and recipes rooted in the Lipovan communities of Jurilovca. The product reflects a long relationship between local people, the waters of the Delta and the Black Sea, and the culinary knowledge passed down through generations.

The gift also includes rose syrup from Grădina Zânelor, capturing the delicate floral aromas that have become increasingly associated with Dobrogea’s artisanal food movement, alongside almonds from Migdale de Jurilovca, a product that highlights the unique climate and agricultural potential of the region.

Together, these products create a portrait of a place where land and water meet, where different cultures have lived side by side for centuries, and where traditions remain part of everyday life.

More than a food gift, Flavours of Jurilovca is a celebration of community. Every product comes from local producers. Every flavour carries a story. Every detail reflects the people who continue to shape the identity of Dobrogea through their work, creativity and care.

In 2026, Flavours of Jurilovca was selected as one of the four products representing Dobrogea – European Region of Gastronomy 2029 Candidate at the World Food Gift Challenge 2026, organised by the International Institute of Gastronomy, Culture, Arts and Tourism (IGCAT) in Crete, European Region of Gastronomy 2026. The competition celebrates food-related gifts that embody the cultural identity, creativity and heritage of their regions. The competition celebrates food gifts that express the culture, heritage and identity of their regions through authentic products and meaningful stories.

Its participation demonstrated that the most powerful gifts are not necessarily the most elaborate ones. Sometimes, they are simply honest reflections of a community, carefully gathered and shared with others.

Flavours of Jurilovca is more than a gift.

It is a piece of Dobrogea, woven by hand, shaped by local traditions and meant to be shared slowly, with the people you love.
